Yasaka Shrine in the Gion district, KYOTO

This Shinto shrine enshrines Susano'o-no-mikoto, or a god of the sea in the Japanese mythology. The origin of this shrine is not certain. There are several different theories about when and who built this shrine.  The current buildings of the shrine were rebuilt in 1654. Today, the shrine is famous for the Gion festival, one of the Three Great Festival of Kyoto.
